How to Memorise Lines

I have a show coming up at the beginning of December, and have managed to snag myself one of the lead roles. But with a lead role also comes the pressure of memorising a ton of lines.

I don't want to mess up like I did, when I was Bill Sykes in Oliver and had two scenes by myself, so of course performed the wrong one and cut out half the show. So after the trauma, a few years ago I have become a pro at memorising lines. After all I did remember my German coursework. So here are a few tips...

*This was primarily written for actors and actresses but some of the tips could also apply to language coursework, memorising speeches or just learning anything in general.

Learn Your Lines and Cues

I think that this is very important to say first, it's all very well knowing your lines but if you don't know when to say them, then it is almost as bad (if not worse) than not knowing your lines at all.

Listen to Your Lines On Repeat

This works especially well with songs as it will drill the tune and the lyrics into your head. And you can also, record yourself saying your lines. Although, I would suggest that you take a break sometimes, otherwise you'll get sick of them VERY quickly.

Marry Your Lines with Actions

Actions and movement can help stimulate your memory of what the next words, sentences or even whole lines are. But make sure they go with the character that you're playing on stage

Understand the Meaning Behind What You're Saying

If you don't understand the script then you probably won't portray the emotion and tell the story correctly and I find it easiest if I dissect the meaning behind each line and that in turn helps me with memory.

Say Your Lines the Same as You Would On Stage

If you have an accent, learn your lines with an accent, or it can sound forced and if you don't practice the lines exactly as you would on stage, you'll end up doing the same thing or something very similar to what you did in rehearsal.

Rehearse With Someone

It is good for someone to be relaying your cues to you, so you don't accidentally say your cues on stage, instead of just your lines, and they can also give you non-verbal cues and gestures, provide you with instant feedback and you can get used to hearing your voice actually saying the lines.

Record Your Cues

If you don't have someone to read the cues, record yourself saying them - or even better the person who actually is going to say them - and reply to your own (or their) voice, you won't get all the benefits of rehearsing with somebody but it is still useful.

Stay Calm

If you get frustrated when memorising your lines, it can feel like you're climbing a mountain but by staying calm and composed, you can retain more and efficiently get the work done. If you can't focus you might need a break.

Write It Down

People who know me, especially from school, will tell you that I write down EVERYTHING. I may be single-handedly destroying the world's rainforests, with how much I write. But writing is my way of remembering things and storing it in my long-term memory and it might be yours too.

Take Breaks

Your brain has a limit on how much it can absorb. And all work and no play can be bad for anyone, regularly take breaks and have periods where you don't think about it at all period. A free-your-mind time.

Associate

If I have long words that are either just annoying or that I haven't seen before or just can't remember I make an association with something else.

Have Fun

Acting, work and school can't have no fun element to it, you have to enjoy yourself and this will help you to learn faster.

We all learn differently, so I really hope that one of these methods that work for me, work for you as well. Good luck learning your lines!

#IAmAWitness

There is a campaign called I See Bullying which I found on Twitter which just sums up what I stand for.

This song is the song used for the campaign and has been one of my favorites ever since came out and the lyrics all about struggle, hope, empowerment, beauty, and love. In the official video, we meet a lot of beautiful people and hear their stories.

It really opened my eyes, but I see similar things every day. So now is the time to make a stand.

How Bullying Has Affected Me

I've been bullied for as long as I can remember, I've never been your stereotypical girl, I played rugby and then put on my heels on afterwards, so I find it really hard as I'm not a girly girl but I'm also not totally a tomboy, I'm just an awkward mixture.

So after many, many years of bullying (I'm so used to it so some of it was probably from me in my head), it is fair to say that I have pretty low self-esteem. I try to be confident - maybe too hard - but when I'm uncomfortable, lost, alone or like I don't fit in, I completely shut down which makes it harder on me as that means that I constantly push people away even if I don't mean to.

I started this blog to help people like me, and keep their spirits up or just educate others so that they just understand and maybe think before they act and realise what they've been doing which seems harmless to them but is crushing to someone else.

About this Campaign

90 percent of teens ages 12-17 who have witnessed some form of online cruelty say they have ignored mean behavior on social media, and more than a third (35 percent) have done this frequently (Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project). Research has shown that the bystander can play a pivotal role in stopping bullying.

In a groundbreaking effort to empower teens to speak up when they see bullying, the Ad Council and an unprecedented coalition of media, corporate and non-profit partners launched the I Am A Witness campaign. Developed pro bono by ad agency Goodby Silverstein & Partners, the campaign aims to stop bullying by activating the “silent majority” of kids who witness it each day, transforming them from passive bystanders into a united, empowered and active collective that will speak up against bullying.

The heart of this campaign is the Witness Emoji. Shaped like a speech bubble with an eye in the center, the Emoji enables teens to take a stand against bullying and show support for someone who is being bullied by posting it online or through a text message.

The Emoji is available on iPhone running iOS 9.1. and via a downloadable keyboard available in the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store. The I Am A Witness keyboard holds a variety of Emoji, GIFs, stickers and messages for teens to use when they experience bullying. They can post the Witness Emoji when they see hurtful comments, or send GIFs and stickers to show support for someone in need. All assets drive to the campaign website IWitnessBullying.org.

What Can You Do?

  • If you know someone who is being seriously bullied - TELL SOMEONE.
  • SPREAD AWARENESS of the effects
  • Be a FRIEND or a SUPPORT to people that you wanted or would want
  • If you see someone being bullied SPEAK UP
  • TAKE YOUR OWN ADVICE
  • THINK about how your ACTIONS AFFECT OTHERS
  • LEARN more about it

How To Stay Motivated To Work Out in Winter

I know as the days have got colder, I have felt less and less inclined to work out. The Great British weather is unpredictable and I haven’t really wanted to jog in the rain or cycle in the frost, but for me sport and exercise is what helps me sleep better, because I have a sleep disorder and that helps me tire it out, and as a dancer and cheerleader it also very important to keep fit. We can't use Winter as an excuse, in some shops it's been Christmas since the end of July. So I thought that a round of inspiration and tips were in order.

Tips

1. Go to the gym

If it’s too cold to work out outside, then a nice warm gym is another viable option. You can do a variety of different types of exercise, whether it’ll cardio or weight training. So get your gym membership today, so you can still work out when the weather is not on your side.

2. Join Boxing or MMA

Boxing and Martial Arts is a great, fun way to keep fit and let your frustrations out and although it is extremely intense, I know a lot of people who look forward to going every session. And if it’s good enough for Demi Lovato and Gigi Hadid, then it must be good enough for us.

3. Find your Winter Sport

If you make a commitment to any sports team or club, then working out will just become part of your daily or weekly routine and you will be working out, enjoying yourself, making friends and you won’t give up as you have a support network and other people relying on you.

4. Have Someone to Work Out With

Having a work out partner helps a lot. I’m really competitive, and I hate losing so having someone there pushes me harder and I don’t want to let them down. And they are a boost when I am tired or feel like giving up halfway through. [Check out my previous exercise buddy, Dara ‘Daza Wilson at backofthenetsouth.com]

5. Work Out at Home

If you feel too tired or too lazy to go out and go somewhere, you can also workout in the comfort of your own home.

6. Listen to Music

Silence bothers me, whereas music breaks up the monotony of the workout and helps me work out for longer. Putting on my favorite workout tracks, almost lets me forget the weather. And different paces and intensity tracks can easily help you to control your workout.

7. Change it Up

Doing the same thing every day can be BORING and make you want to take a day (or a few) off. Changing up your routine can keep it interesting and help you to achieve better results.

8. Think about the Summer Body/Have a Goal

If you keep on working at it, all through winter, by the time everyone is starting to worry about achieving their perfect summer body, you will already be there. If you have a goal, you are more likely to work harder to achieve it and not give up.
Work now, achieve first, laugh later.

9. Incorporate Working Out into Your Normal Routine

For example, I can’t attend weightlifting on a Friday because of Cheer, so I carry a very heavy bag around and do reps when I have the time.

10. Schedule in Workouts

I know, that I always have times where I sit down and doing nothing and hours seems to go by. So if you schedule in workouts at this time then you are replacing the idleness with something useful.

11. Realize that You can Workout While Watching TV

Not all workouts are strenuous and some you can very easily do while watching TV or Netflix (etc.) such as flexibility or you can invest in a workout machine so while you’re having down time you are still working out.

12. Invest in some Equipment

You don’t always want to leave the house to work out, so by having your own equipment, you can work out whenever you want.

13. Youtube can be Your Best Friend

There are so many good workouts, for the gym and at home, on Youtube. I used to always do the ballet workouts, which are so good by the way, but you can also take different types of classes.

14. Surround Yourself with your Motivation and Inspiration

Put up posters and inspirational quotes around your house and on your phone and maybe even get a T-Shirt just to inspire you on those bad days.

15. Follow some Exercise Instagram Accounts

I recommend:

16. Get an Exercise DVD

I, personally, have MANY. Personal favorites of mine are the Zumba ones (although you could go to a class, with the DVD the class comes to me.) and Davina DVDs is a classic.

17. Change Your Lifestyle Choices

Instead of driving everywhere you can easily change your lifestyle by cycling, walking or even catch the bus or train, there’s no work out like daily running for the bus.

So, I hope you found these tips helpful and act on a few. Working out doesn't have to be stressful and you don't have to be a 'certain type of person' to do it. Take a chance. Find your way of working out and have fun.

How to Face Your Fears

We all have fears, whether they be spiders, small spaces, clowns, haunted houses or celery, but with just over two weeks to halloween I thought I'd write a post aimed at facing your fears.

Yes, I know Face Your Fears Day was now ages ago, I messed up, I know. but shouldn't we be facing our fears everyday...

Why should we Consider Everyday to be Face your Fears day??

We all have a variety of different fears that can affect are lives in many different ways. Some are almost impossible not to face, such as going to school and facing bullies and some we can try to avoid like the plague, like coming out of the closet to family who don't understand or even eating celery.

Everyday we take risks, face fears and that takes a lot of courage. People don't just face their fears on face their fears day, they can face them on any day at anytime, anywhere. Not all fears we overcome but we do live with them everyday. Which is why I consider everyday Face Your Fears Day.

What Are My Fears?

It's not really fair to tell people to face their fears when I'm not really honest about my own... (see here)

Some Fears that my Friends Have

I know a lot of people's who are scared that their fears are 'stupid' or 'not scary enough' so I'm going to share a few of my friends without names, just to show you how different they can be.

A fear is caterpillars and celery.
I'm afraid of the inevitability of death
Doing something really nervewracking like auditions, serious interviews, hotseating where all the pressue is on you...
My fear is flies, wasps; anything that can fly into my face
I fear failing to do the right thing at the right time and not meeting all my expectations.
Not getting an A* in German [she's fluent]
I'm scared of all you guys [her friends]
Popcorn
Not know how many orororors to do in Gloria Hosanna in Excelsus
Reading or speaking in front of the class
You...
Stuttering in front of my crush
Dropping someone in cheer
 Disappointing my parents
Talking to my crush

How to Face your Fears today

All fears are different and some are easier to face than others, but my advice to you is that everyday to make an effort to confront your fear, whether that is  talking about it,  taking a step to conquer it or even thinking about it, if you're too far from that fear just actively do something to face it.

Whenever someone has a fear I think it's best to just go for it!  It's better to regret it afterwards than to regret not doing it. Because it might go really well, I mean it might not, but it might go very well.

Even if you embarass yourself, it's okay. If you don't embarass yourself your life is boring

Facing Your Fears isn't easy, even without trying to overcome them. But I found these two videos and website really helpful in trying to address and overcome mine.

The Ultimate Guide to Year 7

Beauty is new experiences

Introduction

Yesterday, students all over the country were ending their secondary school careers and recieving their GCSE results. So I decided to write a post for those of you about to embark on your secondary school journey.

Overview:

▪ Introduction
▪ Top Tips (from some of the guys who've been there)
▪ 7 Things to do Before you Start Year 7
▪ What to Bring On Your First Day
▪ My Year 7 Fears
▪ Summary
▪ Conclusion

Top Tips (from some of the guys who've been there)

Be Prepared for the Extra Pressure

Secondary School is harder than primary school; it's bigger, you have new teachers and new classes and meet new people. You go from being the oldest in the school to the youngest. In other words, school is effort. But in the long run it's worth it.

Don't bring a Bag Filled with Stuff that you Probably Don't Need

I along with pretty much every year 7 did this on my first week (or maybe it was 6 months) but spoiler alert you probably don't need to lug around a heavy oxford dictionary.

Try to Find the Loyal Friends that Actually Care about You

You end up spending more time with these people than you do with your family. Of course, you won't know this straight away but care about your friends because these could be friends for life.

Don't be a Bitch (It Will Come Back to Haunt You)

By the time you get to year 11, everyone is friends with everyone except the guys you have bad blood with. Don't be that person.

Make as many Friends As Possible on the First Day

You get close.with everyone overtime. But make a good first impression on the first day everyone allows for a bit of slack and you'll all look back and laugh.

Narrow Friends Down from There

Don't drop friends; be a friend to everyone but form a close group of friends to gossip with, tell secrets and wingmanning.

Stick with Someone Social

Everyone is awkward and embarrassed on their first day (I sure was) but some people just seem to handle the pressure better than others. For shy or nervous people I recommend that you stick with someone who introduces themselves to everyone that way you make friends quicker and meet more people.

Be Friendly

Everyone loves a guy/girl who is a friend to everyone. Contrary to popular belief it is not the Sharpays of this world that are truly popular and fabulous (HSM reference), it is those thar are loved.

Don't just Stick with People You Know

Remember that there are some people in the room that don't know anyone. However, relieving and exciting it is to see someone you already know, don't close yourself off from meeting more people. Push the boundaries and open the door.

Make friends with Older People
- Kids in older years are notorious for picking on the new kids. By being sweet (and possibly cute) and by showing some fire (the good kind) by just being yourself you can charm them into stopping and also make some awesome friends

Enjoy it before all the GCSE pressure
- Contrary to how it might feel at first year 7 is one of your best years of school. You finally feel like your growing up; get very little homework and making new friends. Being the babies isn't so bad.

7 Things to do Before you Start Year 7

1. Figure out how you'll be getting to school

Nothing's worse than getting lost on your first day and winding up late.

If you're getting the bus or train, find out fares, where you get on and off and how to get to school from the bus stop or train station.

2. Buy the Dreaded Uniform

If you have amazing uniform then lucky you. But regardlesss if it's nice or not you have to wear it, so rock up to the school shop and buy that uniform (probably too big) but own it.

3. Make sure you know how to wear your school uniform

Know how to do the basics like tie your tie or the length of your skirt and figure out how to accessorise within the school rules (which is always a useful guide).

4. Pack your Bag the Day Before

It helps. Trust me.

5. Get a Good Night's Sleep the Day Before

You want to be meeting people when you can concentrate during the frenzy of new people and new places.

6. Ask Questions

Talk to people about your worries, fears and insecurities. Talk to a parent, close friend or sibling but always feel if you're too embarrassed, they can't answer or you're just plain curious to ask me questions in the comments, social media, contact form or email me here. ~~~~~

7. Back to School Shopping

You have to have to have things to take to school. I recommend something that defines you or an aspect of your personality

What to Bring on your First Day

  • A pencil case
  • Pencils
  • Pens
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Coloured pencils
  • Highlighters
  • Coloured Pens
  • Scientific Calculator (for maths)
  • Rubber
  • Sharpener
  • School Bag (I prefer a  cute, comfy backpack)
  • Money (for food and transport)
  • Key (if making your own way home)
  • Lock (for locker)
  • Any letters that were given on the Induction day or sent to your parents
  • Phone (if you have one - to get contacts and stay in contact with parents/guardians)
  • Bus/Train/Helicopter? Pass (whichever way you'll be travelling - it would be cool to get a helicopter to school...)
  • PE Kit
  • Anything else that your school told you to bring

My Year 7 Fears

Most of my best friends are going somewhere else. I'll be alone... everyone was so friendly and was as open to making friends as I was to having them.

I'll never see my friends anymore, they're going to a different school... You make new friends but I'm still friends with loads of my primary school friends 5 years after we left. If you want it you can make it work.

I'm worried I'll get lost. My new school is so much bigger than my old one... everyone (the teachers and older kids) were so helpful. I basically knew my way around in a week.

I won't like the food. I've seen school dinners on TV and they look disgusting...  At my school the food is AMAZING (expensive but amazing) it contains a selection of pizza, pasta and a main meal as well as other things. We get to choose exactly what we have.

I'll get picked on by the older kids... Sorry guys but this is a rite of passage. But don't worry it's not too bad, it's mostly playful and you get bombarded with 'You're so cute' for half a year, annoying but harmless and think that next year you can initiate the new recruits. But if it gets too bad just mention it to a teacher.

Summary

  • Just be you, no matter how awkward or weird, you'll be spending 5 years with these guys before you know it they'll feel like family.

  • Make friends not enemies, everyone's nervous, you're all in the same boat so get in there and just say 'hi' to get the conversation started.

  • Buy all your uniform and utensils beforehand and pack the day before so you don't forget to bring anything.

Conclusion

I hope you have a great time at secondary school. Hope my advice works for you! Shoutout to Saoirse and Missy from glamorouschic1.blogspot.co.uk for all your help Check out her blog and let me know how it pans out in the comments...

Essentials for Modelling from BNTM

Today I had a BNTM marathon and therefore am now an expert. This is what I learned would consider essential to be a top model...

1. Keep Your Skin Clear

You need to be able to work the camera, with or without make-up. Work it with no makeup just like Queen B.

2. Have a Healthy Diet

Well, not really but a poor diet can cause breakouts, or weight gain or just generally feeling awful.

3. Stay Toned

It's important to stay in shape when a model, sometimes clothes can be unforgiving so staying toned can be important.

4. Show Versatility

The ability to be able to pull off different looks can be very important. It can get you editorial shoots or high fashion shoots letting you get more jobs. Also, no one wants to see the same expression every time so change it up like the Queen.

5. Be Adventurous with your Moves

The larger the variety of positions the more likely it is that you'll get the jobs.

6. Embrace Your Personality

If all else fails, your personality is what can make or break you. Lady Gaga obviously has it in bucketloads.

So if you're planning to go into modelling live a fit and healthy lifestyle and be adventurous with your poses including your face and inject personality and expression into everything and you should ace it.

How to Save Your Coursework

If like me you decided to leave 25% of your GCSE to the last three days - wouldn't recommend it by the way - here are some top tips to save your work, especially applicable to History, Geography and Business coursework.

1. Plan. Plan. Plan.
The more intricate your planning, the quicker and easier it will be to write your essay.
I recommend planning, minimum, the main and sub-points in each paragraph. If you're dedicate think about maybe even breaking these down into sentence by sentence without writing the actual essay down by presenting them in bullet points.

2. Research like Hell
Research can make our break your essay. Analyse all the notes the teacher gave you and research more in the library or online to fill in the gaps and insert the information into your plan.

3. Make a Time Schedule
By organising your time, or having a to-do list it stops you from wasting time in the Coursework lesson and helps you make the most of each session.

4. Look Back
Look back over work done previously on how to improve it with the least amount of effort if you don't think it's up to par.

5. Focus on Finishing
You have a goal, a mission, to finish the coursework in the time frame, which must be respected. Having this focus will speed you up in itself.

6. Don't lose it
Stay calm and collected and success is sure to follow

So although, I have left completing my coursework til late (admittedly through fault of my own) my best advice, is to finish it as well and quickly as realistically possibe, without procrastinating.

Hope you do well
